Delhi's Indira Gandhi International Airport is one of 2009's lowest rated airports with just 45% of its scheduled passenger flights arriving on time. Beijing Capital International Airport had the worst departure record with just 38% of flights leaving on time in 2009.

A flight is considered "on time" if it arrives or departs less than 15 minutes after its scheduled take-off or landing time. If you're arriving or departing from airports on the list below you can expect to be either waiting on the airport's tarmac or hanging out, watching flight updates on the electronic boards witihin these airports. Oh.. and don't forget your pillow.

A new rule prohibits U.S. airlines operating domestic flights from permitting an aircraft to remain on the tarmac for more than three hours without deplaning passengers. This rule accepts the fact that many of the nation's airlines are routinely delayed for departure. Dallas/Fort Worth, New York LaGuardia, New Jersey's Newark, California's Ontario and Miami International Airports all made the list of the least timely airports in the United States.

Conversely, the world's most on-time airports are in Japan and South Korea. Flights at Osaka's Itami Airport arrived and departed on time 94% of the time in 2009. At Seoul's Gimpo International Airport, 91% of passenger flights arrived on time, and 93% departed as scheduled.

The list was compiled from information provided by FightStats, an aviation data company which compiles flight information from airports, airlines, flight reservation systems and other sources around the world. They considered flights at the world’s 200 busiest airports by passenger volume, according to Airports Council International’s 2009 World Traffic Report; and included only airports about which FlightStats has the most detailed information. South American airports were not included in the analysis.
